アーガイルとは２色以上の菱形（ひしがた）の編み込み格子模様のことを言います。
数色の菱形の連続で構成された中心を辺に並行した線が交差した柄です。
たとえばセータ―や靴下などによく用いわれていますね。
「アーガイルチェック」「アーガイル柄」と言われなす。
名称の由来には諸説ありますがスコットランドの旧州名「アーガイル」からとられた説が一般的です。
